WHAT MAKES A GREAT HEADSHOT?

The short answer is expression! Your expression in your headshot can tell a story to the world and it is important that you are sending the right message to your audience. Do you want to come off as angry or uninteresting? Of course not! There are 3 things that make up a killer headshot.

Confidence

You want to show the world that you are confident in yourself and your abilitie. How do you do that in a headshot? It is with your eyes. Most people will get in the front of the camera and open their eyes wider than normal giving themselves the deer in the headlights look. This does not look good in photographs. Instead you can improve this by simply “squinching” your low eyelids and it gives the impression of confidence.

Approachability

You do not want to look pissed off or like a serial killer in your headshot. Approachability in a headshot comes from the mouth. A genuine smile or small smirk is what you need, people can spot a fake/forced smile a mile away.

Personality

The best way to show your personality in your headshots is with your eyebrows. They are often overlooked in photography but can convey a variety of things depending on how you move them, anger, surprise, sassiness. Let your personality shine through with your eyebrows.

Confidence, Approachability, and Personality are the three things you need to create that amazing headshot. The best part about this recipe is that you already can show all three. In fact, you do it every day without even knowing it!
